In un tempo in cui si beveva solo caffè, Thomas Twining sfidò le convenzioni e iniziò a commerciare tè con le Indie Orientali. Da allora il tè divenne la bevanda calda preferita in Gran Bretagna e da lì si diffuse in tutta Europa. La storia di Twinings inizia nel 1706: all’epoca le bevande più diffuse erano il caffè, il gin e la birra (“ale”). Il tè era già stato importato nel Regno Unito nel 1662 ad opera della Principessa Caterina di Braganza, sposa portoghese di Carlo I d’Inghilterra. Nel 1706 Thomas Twining acquistò la Tom’s Coffee House in Devereux Court, nello Strand, il quartiere di Londra nel quale le famiglie aristocratiche si erano trasferite dopo l’incendio della città. Il luogo è quello in cui ancora oggi sorge l’unico shop monomarca Twinings, lo Strand.
